Reading - Just the Basics

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

Phonemes are the building blocks of language. Represented by letters of the alphabet, they are the basic sounds of spoken words. An example is that most people automatically hear that the word "boat" is made up of three different sounds: "buh", "oh", and "tuh."

Reading requires that a student decodes or recognizes these phonemes as words (phonics). An easy task? Let's see! Go to the following link, Misunderstood Minds from PBS/WGBH Educational Foundation, and see how well you can decode a short paragraph with basic phonemes.

Decoding is that important task that teaches how sounds form words so that ultimately sentences, paragraphs, and entire passages or works can be understood.
