Staying Out of Internet Trouble ~
E-mail Is Not a Telephone

Am I Liable?

The Internet provides one of the easiest communication tools available. It is quick, convenient, cheap, and as insecure as it is quick, convenient, and cheap. A message sent months ago may remain on an ISP's server or in a backup, and can easily be retrieved by anyone who knows how to do it.

Remember Oliver North? His erased messages were recovered over six months later and used against him in a court proceeding. E-mail can come back to haunt you.

It is actually quite easy for someone to intercept your messages or those of your staff if they want to. It may be just the administrator of your ISP or your office intranet or it may be someone else!

Just remember that most staff members do not expect to completely sacrifice their privacy while at work. Typically, their access to the network and computer system is by password control. Some staff may not be aware that system administrators are usually able to access everything on the network even those messages in their personal e-mail accounts.
