Staying Out of Internet Trouble ~
E-mail Is Not a Telephone

E-mail Junkies

Are you "tied to your e-mail?" Then, you may be an e-mail junkie! Like many people in education, you have probably come to rely on workplace e-mail for everything from obtaining memos from the state to sharing information to private internal communications. E-mail has empowered education, as well as business, with an extraordinary capacity for true world-wide communications. Like never before, you are able to communicate with almost anyone, anywhere.

However, despite all of the wonderful aspects of e-mail, there exist potential threats as well. Use of e-mail has the potential to increase liability, decrease productivity, and create security and confidentiality problems.

Beyond the potential for confidentiality breaches, lost productivity, and legal liability, improper use of electronic mail can result in other series problems, such as network congestion and downtime, security threats such as viruses and trojans, and even the potential for legal ramifications.

The increased amount of e-mail your staff receives is also a strong potential source of problems. E-mail communications are growing at an incredible rate along with the problems that they can cause.
