Background

Jennifer is a single mother of three children. She works two different jobs in order to support her family. Her daytime job has a possibility for a large promotion, if she can obtain her GED. Because she has been out of school for fifteen years, Jennifer knows that she needs to brush up on some of her skills. She has located an adult education center near her neighborhood and decides to sign up for the winter semester. With hard work, she hopes to pass her GED Tests by spring so that the promotion will be hers and she can quit her second job.

Incident

On a cold night in December, Jennifer rushes to the adult education center to take the mandatory entrance exam for the next semester's courses. As a single working mother, it is important that she obtain her GED so that she can get that promotion at work. She knows that she will need help in getting her GED credential, so doing well on the entrance exam is very important to her. The instructor explains the need to complete the entire test before leaving and the process for the test.

Jennifer is working hard, trying her best to get good scores. She is halfway through the exam when the receptionist interrupts the group and explains that there is an emergency phone call for Jennifer James. Debbie, her 10-year old daughter, had slipped on an ice-covered sidewalk at school and had been rushed to the hospital with a possible head wound. Jennifer frantically apologizes to the instructor as she races out of the room. Upon arriving at the hospital, Jennifer finds that Debbie will be fine.
